Pet Ultrasound in San Antonio, TX

Ultrasound is a noninvasive, pain-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to examine a pet’s internal organs and other structures within the body. It can help evaluate the heart, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, and bladder, detect fluid, cysts, tumors, or abscesses, and confirm or monitor pregnancy.

We may use this imaging technique alongside radiographs (x-rays) and other diagnostic methods to ensure a complete and accurate diagnosis. Interpretation of ultrasound images requires great skill and expertise.

What to Expect

During the procedure, our veterinarian applies gel to the skin and gently moves a small handheld tool called a transducer over the area of interest. The gel helps the transducer glide smoothly and capture clear, detailed images.

The transducer emits ultrasonic sound waves that bounce off internal structures, creating echoes that form detailed images displayed on a monitor. These images are then reviewed by a boarded internal medicine specialist (internist) to provide expert interpretation and recommendations.

Ultrasound does not involve radiation, has no known side effects, and usually does not require sedation or anesthesia. To achieve the best image quality, the area being examined may need to be shaved.
